The Survivor's Council of the Massachusetts' Brain Injury Association
is made up of traumatic brain injury survivor's and stroke victim's.
We meet once a month in Weston, Ma. to plan events for the community
to raise awareness of the effects of traumatic brain injury and to
also raise awareness of how to prevent traumatic brain injury in children
and adults.
One way we have addressed the issue of helping children feel proud
of wearing sports helmets to prevent brain injuries in sports related
accidents, has been to coordinate an event in Concord, Massachusetts
known as the Sports Helmet Safety Day. In this event, we gave away
helmets, had a obstacle course for bikes, skate boards, etc. , and
a free raffle for Red Socks tickets, and other sports gear, all donated
by nearby sports stores. CVS Pharmacy also joined in by, helping with
advertising, donating free hot dogs, drinks, and ice cream. 'Dunkin
Donuts' donated free coffee and donuts for the staff of the event.
The Concord Police ran the obstacle course, gave away free helmets,
and much well appreciated time in the planning of each year's event.
The Emerson Unbrella Center for the Arts also helped in designing
the layout of the flyer for advertising in the schools, and in distributions
of the flyers. We thank all who were involved in year's past.
This year we have been involved in encouraging support groups in raising
awareness in their areas of the work of the Massachusetts Brain Injury
Association in the Twentieth Anniversary Year Celebration.
We also have recently met with the staff of the MBIA, and Representative
Corey Atkins, to discuss ways of coordinating together and planning
future initiatives for awareness events in Massachusetts for hospitals,
attorneys conference, etc., and learning more about each other's work
for aiding victims of brian injury.
We are looking forward to meeting with the MBIA lobbyist , Inta Hall,
to learn of the important work she has been doing with our state representative's
and senator's to increase the budget for all head injury survivor's,
and keep the Statewide head Injury Program well funded. We would like
to find a way to help her , in her important work, too.
We'd like YOUR ideas, and INVITE you to join us in our monthly meetings
in Weston, MA.
We'll be looking forward to meeting more of you in the 2004, and joining
together to help plan prevention programs of brain injury in
Massachusetts.
